Walter Jones brings his distinctive and evocative house productions for the first time to Whiskey Pickle records, presenting the solid ‘Balanced Sounds’ EP. Opener ‘Night Flier’ is classic deep house at its most sumptuous, a sharp jack and synth washes occasionally cut through by a surface sheen of nasal acid squeals. The record gradually intensifies through ‘Stepping Into Paradise’ into the more brutal palette of ‘Colossus’, which makes great use of beautifully-rendered slams of white noise and 8-bit cowbells. Final track ‘Tokyo Garden’ closes proceedings on a high, with strangely dissonant melodic lines perching above a high-energy pulse and glittering synth pads.
