Christina Vantzou, formerly one half of Kranky duo Dead Texan, is back with another collection of timeless neo-classical compositions. No. 2, made once again with chief collaborators Minna Choi of Magik* Magik Orchestra and A Winged Victory For The Sullen’s Adam Wiltzie, expands upon the refined sounds of Vantzou’s first album in every way. A 15-piece ensemble that features a bolstered string section, piano and woodwinds is enlisted to perform the full-length suite. The reverb-heavy choral vocal on ‘Vancouver Island Quartet’ may give away when these pieces were recorded, but on the achingly beautiful ‘Going Backwards To Recover That Which’ and indeed much of No. 2, it is very easy to forget when and where this music was made.
