Soul Jazz Records readies another exhaustive collection of material, digging back into the archives of the now legendary Jamaican institution Studio One and its founder, the late great Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd. The compilation explores the rocksteady sound, one that was precursory to the birth of reggae and ska as well as being hugely influential in the later development of dub and dancehall. Here the movement’s key artists are fondly remembered, ranging from the upbeat, feel-good vibes of The Heptone’s ‘Party Time’ and ‘Love Won’t Come Easy’ to the sun-drenched harmonies of The Gaylads’ ‘Joy In The Morning’. A beautiful collection recommended for anyone with an interest in roots reggae or some of the today’s more modern permutations.
