Estimable sound-artist and turntablist Janek Schaefer arrives for the first time on ambient stronghold 12k with ‘Lay-By Lullaby’. Taking recordings from the middle of the night above the M3 motorway at the end of British sci-fi author and provocateur JG Ballard’s road, the album implores the listener to opt out of the rush of modern life for moments of contemplation. Over 12 tracks, Schaefer meshes discernible recorded material with plays on radio static and interference, peppered with luxurious synthetic drones. It is the artist’s precise rendering of every sound which makes the LP special, with every ambient wash full of fluctuating textural detail.
