It is difficult to overstate the importance of Detroit classic ‘Clear’, released by Juan Atkins and Richard Davis under the name Cybotron in 1983. The track’s sleek vision of machine music remained visionary for its time and 25 years after its release remains an outstanding document of futuristic electronic music at its best. Scaling sharp synth patterns and an endlessly rolling raw machine groove trade off with bizarrely warped vocal samples which render their human source robotic, occasionally punctuated by taut burrowing bass. The track is nothing short of extraordinary, and for fans of Actress and his peers, tracing the lines of influence back to a key source will be a revelation if they haven’t already done so.
