Knitting Factory Records’ reissuing of Fela Kuti’s back catalogue, almost in its entirety, has given a sense of the scope and vision of the Afrobeat legend’s work and its enduring impact. 1992’s ‘Underground System’, one of Kuti’s last major offerings, is full of his trademark infectious rhythmic drive combined with a political urgency lyrically which makes the listening experience far more than all-sing-all-dancing. For those intimate with his output, or coming upon it afresh, taking time to witness this maverick at the end of his career should whet the appetite to keep on listening.
