Chicago reissue label Numero Group have got their hands on a pearl here: a collection from Ellis Taylor’s legendary Forte label, home to Marva Whitney and so many other pre-disco soul stars. Distilled across 21 tracks there’s groovy bass and sax on Louis Chachere’s ‘The Hen Part I’ and jazzy stylings on ‘Whatever You Do (Do It Good’) by Gene Williams. The latter half picks up Forte’s ‘80s resurrections through synth-edged gems like Sharon Revoal’s ‘Reaching For Our Star’.
