Having explored her own path through drone, ambient, and modern classical music for over a decade, Davachi joins forces with Disciples to present the first anthology spanning her career. These first two volumes of Selected Works revel in the domain of long, slowly evolving tones, plucked from archives of cassettes and CDs, performances and unreleased recordings.

Subtitled “Experiments In Psychoacoustics, Timbre & Minimalism”, the compilation features songs that play with our perception of harmony and texture. Layers of microtonal drones fold over each other in seamless arrangements; it’s only once we come out on the other side of a song that we realise the composition has completely changed, with synths, sirens, and colliding frequencies patiently rising to soaring altitudes. Throughout many of her works, Davachi allows these curious harmonic exchanges and progressions to sprawl and breathe, swimming in shimmering overtones.

One can almost trace the waveforms mapping each track: the subtle keys of ‘Alms Vert’ ebb and flow underneath tangible oscillations. ‘In The Grand Luxe Hall’ is a slow dance between vibrating drones and patient, carefully bowed strings, eternally rising and falling with all sounds buzzing as though hitting a universal frequency. One of Davachi’s more emotionally resplendent tracks, ‘A Woman Escapes Cue 4’ is a foggy pool with soft presses of organ keys, meanwhile ‘Neustadt’ is a resonant tower of wind, a balm of sound where sweeping reeds are muted under the enveloping sine tones.

Spanning ten years of entirely singular compositions, Selected Works I & II showcases the glorious back catalogue of Sarah Davachi.
