Experimental rap trio Death Grips had become certified masters of the light and shadow game by the 2013 release of their third LP Government Plates. Messing around with their own lore (and career) from a perch high above the music industry, Death Grips had by then cultivated massive online-addled buzz and legitimate major label interest for music that scanned several notches below what was accessible on rap radio at the time. So naturally they put the album up for free. They’re playing things a little closer to the vest these days, what with a vinyl reissue for what was once a free download an all, but the music on records like Government Plates still tells the most important part of the story: Death Grips were up to something revelatory, and tracks like ‘This Is Violence Now’ and ‘Anne Body’ still sound like nothing else.
