Contemporary cellist, composer and performer Okkyung Lee breathes life and fury into her bow as seen through this newest album, “Ghil”. Produced by artist Lasse Marhaug, “Ghil” is an untouched, raw look into Lee's master technique and vulnerable story-telling. Recorded with nothing but a vintage tape recorder and bare bones editing, her instrument becomes a clear voice taking a distinctive and bold shape across the tone-poems “The Crow Flew After Yi Sang” and “Strictly Vertical”. Re-imagining classical motifs and mixing them with developing instrumentation is a feat Lee excels at in this twisting, exciting album.
