Stones Throw dusts off a late 90s classic from the vault with this new reissue of Lootpack’s Soundpieces: Da Antidote LP. A real coming out party for an entire wing of underground rap, Soundpieces is both the first album produced entirely by Madlib (who also raps here) as well as the debut of (or at least the first major bars from) storied MCs like Quasimoto, Oh No, and Declaime. Madlib’s signature head-knocking drums and dusted synths approach was clearly intact from the jump, and it’s a pleasure to hear what was then the future of West Coast hip hop mixing it up with vanguard figures like Dilated Peoples.
