After making a brief appearance on an eponymous website in 2020, Sam Gendel’s anthology album, Fresh Bread, a free-associative meander through Gendel’s signature jazz-inflected textures, receives a double LP release. Processed sax and guitar jut though hip-hop, lo-fi, ambient and vapour-trap beats like a host of cartoonish characters, greeting the listener as they travel through the huge track-list and while mostly solo, collaborations from Carlos Niño, Jamire Williams, Daniel Aged, Gabe Noel, and Philippe Melanson diversify the sound palette. Pieced together from hard drives, live performances and sketches, Fresh Bread, like the LPs cover, feels like a connection of loose scribbles coming together into a cohesive whole.
