In the extended Czar universe, the ultimate tete-a-tete between MF DOOM and Czarface (that’s underground duo DJ 7L and Esoteric, along with Wu-Tang legend Inspectah Deck) could’ve gone either way; a battle for hip-hop super-villain supremacy, or a diabolical plot hatched by two evil masterminds working in perfect, hair-brained concert. Fortunately for us, we get the latter. Making good on 2018’s Czarface Meets Metal Face, which set the groundwork with all-powerful fusions of tag-teamed verses and updated vintage boom baps, the collaborative venture constructs a full-scale hip-hop death ray with Super What?
Split down the middle into a ‘Doom Side’ and a ‘Czar Side’, the two overlords of modern hip-hop circle each other, pacing around their secret lair, concocting lyrical super-weaponry alongside evil minion guest spots from Del the Funky Homosapien, DMC and Kendra Morris. Just as Deck’s undisputed knack for storytelling shines across this release, DOOM’s metal-fingered vice grip on hip-hop comes across on ‘DOOM Unto Others’; a fly melding of the goofy and grandiose, delivered with the pithy style of the seminal Madvillainy.
Initially deferred from a grand unveiling by two even greater evils — the COVID-19 pandemic and the untimely passing of one of its architects (RIP DOOM) — the full force of this masked pairing is finally ready to be unleashed on the unsuspecting world.
