A figure as central to various Los Angeles music scenes as he is completely and utterly alien, producer and percussionist Carlos Niño is still breaking new ground two decades into his ever-evolving career. Having recruited a whole host of collaborator pals — from Dntel to Laraaji — More Energy Fields, Current is a collective affair of multiple voices and ideas. As is customary in Niño’s projects, it defies easy categorisation. ‘Salon Winds’ and ‘Togetherness’ glow with jazz flutes and luminescent synths while making gentle nods toward hip-hop production. Meanwhile, the likes of ‘Nightswimming’ vacillate on threads of pure new age.
