Japanese composer Toshihiko Mori — famed for playing keys and programming drums for Ryuichi Sakamoto throughout the 1990s — seems to have followed a similar trajectory to his former bandleader with Jinen. Using little more than the legendary Prophet 5 synthesiser, Mori paints a world of fading colour and autumnal atmospheres through wind-swept drones and melancholic chord sequences, sounding like a funereal church service performed deep in a dense wood. The word ‘jinen’ is used in Japanese to denote spontaneity, a ruling principle throughout this EP, but the amount of textural detail on the likes of ‘Kibou’ suggest the work of a perfectionist composer.
