Future Beat Alliance’s Beginner’s Mind is a masterful LP of electronic music, one that ranges from off-kilter rhythm tracks to awe-inspiring ambient excursions. There are plenty of beat-driven numbers here, though not much on Beginner’s Mind is geared towards the club - only ‘Alliance Black Acid’ stands as a potential DJ tool. Rather, many of these tracks display the same quixotic approach to drum programming that one finds in Stephen Mallinder’s work. Beginner’s Mind is periodically washed out by glorious ambient numbers like ‘Tell Me About These Dreams’.
