How often do you come across albums where echolocations of bats are the primary compositional source material? Not often at all - indeed, Field Works’ Ultrasonic collection is the first album of its kind. The fresh sonic terrain is seized upon with glee by a selection of contributors which includes Mary Lattimore, Ben Lukas Boysen, Sarah Davachi and Eluvium, resulting in a hugely varied collection - some of the artists leave the source material relatively untreated, but others construct drones, stirring contemporary classical composition, woozy ambiences and much else besides across Ultrasonic’s fourteen tracks.
