Soul Jazz Records have outdone themselves yet again with Black Riot, a collection of golden-age jungle, rave and hardcore. These dozen tunes still sound like the future all these years later - the sonic innovation, risk-taking production and commitment to bassweight principles remains as stunning as ever. While the bulk of Black Riot focuses on breakbeat styles, tracks like Nu Jacks’ ‘House Sensation’, which feature Ivory Ranks toasting on a Chicago house beat, are crucial chronicles of a moment in which ragga modes were starting to infiltrate all corners of the rave scene. Those who cop physical editions may well find a graphic mini-novel from Paolo Parisi included in the bundle, one that continues the tale told on Parisi’s previous collaborations with Soul Jazz (Invasion of the Killer Mysterons and Mysterons Invade the Jackin’ Zone).
