Recorded during a four day residency at London’s esteemed venue Cafe OTO, trumpeter and saxophonist Joe McPhee’s Decay takes frenetic free jazz down to a gentle — but no less volatile — simmer. Accompanied by a sturdy rhythm section from drummer Steve Noble and bassist John Edwards, along with keys from Alexander Hawkins, McPhee’s snaking lines quiver across his backing group’s oddly soaring musicality, bringing to mind more Kamasi Washington than Ornette Coleman.
