More so than any other genre, the fine lines between organic and synthetic are continually toed by ambient music. Synths become birdsong, birdsong becomes entrancing rhythm in turn. That’s where Spanish artist How To Levitate finds his own thematic fixation on Oceans, transmogrifying arpeggiated tones and whirling drones into something elemental, as mutable as the great oceans themselves. This is his greatest achievement: it’s near impossible to tell where the real ends and the fictional begins.
