The pale faced family on the hill is an unidentified group of experimental composers, and this self-titled LP is their debut release in collaboration with the cellist Oliver Coates. While the cloak of anonymity adds a certain mystique to the proceedings, what is clear is that their self-titled is a thrilling and often unexpectedly mobile set of ambient productions. While the three-part ‘Slime Light Bends’ series plays closer to the elemental drift of typical drone music, the record’s two shorter tracks are a bit more of a wild card. The closing ‘Clones of Vega’ in particular is practically spilling out the sides with overstimulated noise, almost like the sound of playing every sample on your machine simultaneously. In any case, it’s a fascinating step for a collaboration that we hope to see lots more of.
