The press release for Sleep D’s debut LP Rebel Force describes the group as ‘the ultimate Doof Dance Duo’. There’s certainly a lot of competition for that title, but the ten tracks here make the case for Sleep D in fine style. Stylistically these cuts range from slow, sultry takes on Nordic disco (‘Fade Away’) to 90s-aping acid techno (‘Danza Mart’) to bubbly electro (‘Special Sector’), but almost all of them keep their gaze firmly trained on the dancefloor. Only on the ‘Jazz’ interlude, a hybrid that takes in new age, synthetic ambience and musique concrete, do the beats ease up.
