For Iranian composer Siavash Amini, a chance reading of Maurice Blanchot, sleep-deprivation and prolonged intoxication, and finally a nervous breakdown resulted in a revelatory crepuscular work of art. Put simply, Servus is a meditation on ‘night’. Put less simply, it is a brooding entry in the historical corpus of cultural expression. Fearful as the mysteries of darkness may be, there is yet misunderstood power in its malleability. Amini’s dark ambient landscapes similarly warp reality into dreamtime, an all-at-once space deprived of calendars and clocks.
