Deriving inspiration from North African Gnawa rhythms, as well as consolidating lessons learnt from 2017’s Ore, German drum composer Andrea Belfi once again sets his kit centre stage for the hot-blooded Strata. Accompanied by little more than lowkey brooding electrics, Belfi’s steadfast control vacillates between feverish and tempered, not once betraying which is which. With a hint of an illusionist’s flair, Belfi is busy yet discreet, drumming in a style that recalls Steve Reich’s polyrhythmic experiments.
