We hear a lot of unusual music here at Bleep, but Dhil-un Taht Shajarat Al-Zaqum, the debut LP from Saudi Arabian artist MSYLMA, is one of the most unique records we’ve come across in recent times. At its core Dhil-un Taht Shajarat Al-Zaqum is a set of experimental singer-songwriter tracks - the likes of Xiu Xiu, Arca and Scott Walker can all be detected, and MSYLMA’s vocals are mesmerising up front. However, while you can also parse the influence of everything from industrial icons Coil to Ziur’s tortured deconstructions throughout these eleven hugely evocative tracks, ultimately Dhil-un Taht Shajarat Al-Zaqum doesn’t really sound like much else. Rabit’s Halcyon Veil is the perfect label to release it.
