Meaksuma (Tomaga, Ryo Murakami) with an exciting collaborative LP here. Realistic Monk is a duo made up of electro-acoustic pioneer Carl Stone and Japanese sound artist Miki Yui. Having previously released a live record of their 2017 performance at Cafe Oto the pair now come through with a five-track studio full-length. Realm finds the two meeting in the middle of their respective sounds. Yui’s undulating sonic landscapes set the scene here, all FM drones and chilly ambiences. From time to time Stone’s disembodied samples and garbled spoken word, loops poke their head above the murk. It’s an eerie, strangely hypnotic listen that recalls WRWTFWW’s recent Bernard Parmegiani reissues.
