One of the most unique voices coming out of the LA scene right now, Ashtrejinkins follows up his August 2017 Root Beer EP with a five-track on Apron Records. Like that previous release, Fruit in Failure flits between crackling lo-fi ambiences and Detroit-flecked club tracks that lean heavily on the four-to-the-floor. The focus on the kick on the middle three tracks here draws a neat link between the Motor City and the producer’s home-town, almost as if Moodymann had decided to take some schooling from the Brainfeeder crew. The influence of FlyLo, Teebs et al is further apparent in the wrestless opening and closing cuts.
