Already a landmark album simply by virtue of being the inaugural release on the long-vaunted Teklife label, Afterlife is a thrilling 160bpm celebration of the late DJ Rashad, the inspirational producer who did so much to bring Chicago footwork to a global audience. Encapsulating the spirit of the movement, each of these tracks is a collaboration with the likes of Traxman, DJ Spinn, et al. Highlights are plentiful, spread between raw club/battle tracks and more soulful fare. ‘Get Fuk’d Up’ is another wonderful installment in the series of Rashad/Gant-Man team-ups, and significantly darker than their previous efforts. ‘Do You Wanna Be Mine’ begins as thrilling electro workout and pivots into whiplash disco. It’s always fun looking out for the contents of Rashad’s sample bank – most obviously Giorgio Moroder on ‘Oh God’ and Future on ‘Tony Montana’. Some of these tracks – ‘Roll Up That Loud’; ‘Let’s Roll Out’ – already feel like instant classics. RIP DJ Rashad.
