The fourth album of electronic artist, Tycho, ‘Epoch’ completes the passage that began with Dive in 2011 and then Awake in 2014. During the five-year span of this series, Tycho has evolved from being a solo performer and bedroom artist, aka Scott Hansen, to being a four-piece band performing on stages across the world. ‘Epoch’ reflects this evolution projecting the artistic maturity of a creative project at the height of its powers, accounted for by its nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in the 2017 Grammy Awards.
His expansive, expressive style is characterised by groovy rhythm section figurations of guitar, bass and drum, pitted against broad, ambient-esque synth-scales. Hansen has mastered the art of dynamics, juxtaposing dub-y synth explorations (‘Continuum’) with contemplative electric guitar melodies (‘Field’) as well as driving rhythms and pulsating bass (‘Epoch’, ‘Glider), which punctuate the album throughout. These instrumentals contain rich narratives, epitomising his refreshing band-focussed approach to electronic music.
