Japan Sound Portrait debuts with the hour long Indication 1, an astonishingly unique project that blends street sounds with all manner of sourced field recordings from the far East. Composed by Neil Cantwell and Nick Luscombe (who compiled that ace Gearbox Late Junction compilation) this debut is the first stage in a multimedia project set to build a variety of aural representations of the country, from a sound map phone application to virtual reality experiences.

Japan Sound Portrait Indication 1 features a continuous audio collage of 'crowd-sourced sonic exploration' to create a vastly cinematic aural map of Japan. The recordings meander around each other for the albums duration journeying deep in Tokyo and out into the wilderness. The range of scope is hugely captivating with robust hip-hop & glitch mutations that move with ease into vast great waves of outside ambience, from the Yamanote line passing by overheard to snatches of dialogue from passersby and out into the wilderness. The vastness of the material gives the feeling of wandering through the endless puzzle of William Gibson's Chiba City of a night and out into the docks of his urban sprawl.

Contributions to the recording come from a selection of highly attuned group of artists; TA2MI,Rob Nava-Moreno & dissolvingPath, shinekosei, Woob, amoeba, KanZeOn & Nick Luscombe. Each one bringing their own unique ideas to pull together into this one of a kind recording. Having spent a few weeks with this it's had us drawing parallels with the classic Skam gear from Push Button & NHK, Jeff Mills legendary live at the Liquid Room, KWC 92's imagined soundtrack to the Kowloon walled city & Arovane's Tokyo Ghost Stories. While these comparisons cross out mind, it stands tall as its own deeply immersive piece of modern composition.

An incredible debut and sure to be one of the year's most captivating releases and well worth investing in.
