F.S. Blumm's and Nils Frahm’s third full-length collaboration sees them embrace a new compositional approach: whereas their previous albums as a duo were mainly conceived in the studio, improvisation is at the heart of Tag Eins, Tag Zwei, making it their most intimate effort to date. By expanding their familiar sound pallet of piano, guitar and harmonium with the percussive use of their instruments as well as delay and sustain effects, the duo manage to achieve a natural flow, moving effortlessly from contemplative chords to jazzy sequences, modern classical arpeggios, ambient and folk. A decelerating journey through the introverts of genres, Tag Eins, Tag Zwei is characterised by its candlelight atmosphere, carefully considered afterthoughts at the end of a day – with Nils Frahm’s signature technique of recording the sounds of the fingers touching the instruments adding an extra layer of immediacy.
