Mexican experimental label Umor Rex invite us to experience Roberto Carlos Lange’s work outside of his better known Helado Negro moniker. Born in South Florida to Ecuadorian parents and currently based in Brooklyn, the composer has been releasing albums on Asthmatic Kitty since 2009, exploring themes of Latin-American culture with his English and Spanish lyrics. Plural People is a collection of material created between 1999 and 2001, and — as opposed to his work as Helado Negro — consists of instrumental, beatless structures, though at times, the colourful richly textured drones reflect the contemplative soundscapes of Ombre, his collaborative project with Julianna Barwick. The compilation perfectly captures Lange’s consistent inventiveness as a lot of its ideas stem from year-long experimentation with samplers like MPC 2000 XL and music software such as Max/MSP and Supercollider.
