On his fourth release for 12k, New York electro-acoustic composer Kenneth Kirschner continues to challenge the forms and conventions of modern composition. Compressions & Rarefactions clocks in at over six hours in length, way more than any physical format can hold (instead, the CD features a download code for an additional five hours of music), but it’s not a ‘challenging’ album in the sense of being difficult to listen to. Kirschner’s compositions, at times dense and complicated, at other times sparse and simple, are in fact very easy to dive into, bringing on a pure and trancelike state in the listener.
