Chafik Chennouf, founder of the prolific Rwina Records imprint, presents his debut release under his Akka moniker. Chennouf puts a personal spin on his label’s brand of bass-heavy bangers by drawing inspiration from the Northern African Berbers or Amazigh with whom he shares ancestry, even incorporating field recordings made in the region. The theme is most evident on the closer, where he lays heavily processed vocals spoken in the Tamazight language over serene pads. Elsewhere, it’s business as usual. Standout ‘Eye Of Zohra’ is built from an emotive synth-line, rolling trap drums and ocean-deep bass, while ‘Spacial Scale’ is a fine slice of spacey hip-hop.
