The soundtrack to Ben Wheatley’s latest cinematic genre-bender, ‘A Field in England’ sees Avril Lavigne/Britney Spears co-writer Jim Williams create one bizarre score for the black and white Civil War deserter drugs movie. This is folk music on ketamine, with ‘Baloo My Boy’ taking a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune and converting it to a sing-along acoustic ditty; ‘A Happy Band’ crossing soaring strings with Bontempi keyboards and descant recorder, like a deranged version of ‘Three Blind Mice’; and sinister harpsichords and chanting on ‘Cheek to Bentside’ recalling ‘Once Upon A Time In America’. This eclectic score has the power of a classic and the imagination of a creative mime group - fans of Death Waltz, Waxwork or Invada Records: this is a must-buy!
