The latest from Portraits GRM pairs pieces from Jessica Ekomane and Laurel Halo that explore networks of sound in different directions. Ekomane’s ‘Manifolds’ teases unlimited voicings and expressions out of complex synthesis: dense layers of liquid clockwork, buzzing drones elegantly rising from the molten swirls, then turning to slurring metallic resonance, accelerating and chirping. Meanwhile, Halo’s ‘Octavia’ is the lighter and blurrier flipside, inspired by Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities and written during the Ina-GRM residency that birthed her 2023 album Atlas. Halo creates senses of monolithic depth and levitation at precarious heights through sweeping string timbres, minimalist piano notes and rumbles that revel in reverberation.
