Nearly 5 years after The Alchemist first raised eyebrows with the suggestion of a “secret” project with Earl Sweatshirt floating around Youtube somewhere under a moniker, Warner finally brings this saga full circle with a vinyl release. For all the light and shadow, VOIR DIRE is, at its crux, a heads down, well-executed rap album from a producer and rapper at the top of their respective games. Brisk tempos and brisker song lengths are the mode here, and the only features come from trusted family like MIKE and Vince Staples who have been around Earl’s orbit a long while. Too laser-focused to be a victory lap, VOIR DIRE nevertheless is the sound of The Alchemist and Earl gelling in every way.
