What Maxwell Sterling and Dali de Saint Paul conjured for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction show turned out to be far more fruitful than what their airwaves timeslot revealed; a year later, the duo’s arresting sonic mimesis lands in full with Penumbra. Dense layers of double bass and synths from Sterling generate fog, while de Saint Paul’s vocals respond and swarm in kind. Her pops and consonants form percussive loops like the patter of rain, against which manipulated strings and synths stutter. A performance of interplay and synergy flowing from free improvisation to darkly enchanting composition.
