Congolese dance collective KOKOKO! returns to the Transgressive label for a new compilation of clamouring bangers and body-movers entitled BUTU. Dedicated to the bustling nightlife and extended darkness of their native city Kinshasa (BUTU translates to “the night” in Lingala), the album is a celebration of the soundsystem culture of the Congo and a sonic calling card for the musically omnivorous KOKOKO! crew. Post-punk and the more industrial end of techno brushes up against dancehall, Kuduro, and Kwaito here, making for an awe-inspiring and ruthless stew of sonics.
