Having released well over one hundred albums in a career spanning almost sixty years (along with many, many more production credits that are surely impossible to count), Lee “Scratch” Perry boasts a titanic discography. Working with artists from Bob Marley and King Tubby to The Orb and Mad Professor, his music has touched every corner of the Earth, and Trojan Records have been there since the beginning. One year on from his passing, the label celebrate his legacy with King Scratch: an expansive compilation of his best works from the 60s to the 2000s, featuring solo releases, productions and collaborations, and unreleased material.

While not his first record, the opening ‘People Funny Boy’ would certainly forecast Perry’s rise to stardom. Released in 1968, his fiery, passionate vocals lent to the beginnings of reggae, while a sample of a crying baby showed off his unique creativity. The 12 bar blues chords and plucked bass on the more jazz-inspired ‘Return Of Django’ provide the perfect setting for Val Bennett to shred on the saxophone. On the smooth and sensual ‘Do It Baby (Nice And Easy)’, airy flute loops match Susan Cadogan’s breathy, intimate vocals, with a thick bassline that would eventually become characteristic of the dub rhythms permeating countless music scenes of today.

King Scratch is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Lee “Scratch” Perry’s vast discography, but it’s an incredible reminder of how he shaped the sound of Jamaica and the world over, leaving an indelible mark on the course of modern music history.
