While “Awaken, My Love!” may forever be known as the album that spawned ‘Redbone’, the third LP from Childish Gambino also established him as a pop star of serious clout. On this record we found the one best-known as Donald Glover shifting gears from the hip-hop and rap of his previous records to a potent mix of psychedelic soul, funk and neo-soul. An ambitious and superbly-realised project, the achievement of “Awaken, My Love!” is now honoured by this luxurious boxset. As well as the original LP (pressed on glow in the dark vinyl) we also get live recordings, a booklet, and perhaps most enticingly a VR headset.
