"There's a certain type of induced anxiety that comes with strong basslines. They can get your stomach worked up, so twisted into a knot that you have to force yourself to cut loose just to take your mind off it. It's a technique that when utilized expertly can make you want to dance to everything; those frequencies empower you to flail around and expel every bit of the energy that's caught up in your gut.

The combined artistic vision of Africa Hitech, aka Pritchard (Harmonic 313/Global Communication) and Steve Spacek, is one such outfit that wholly gets that. Their debut album for Warp, 93 Million Miles, follows on from EP, 'Hitecherous' and the single 'Blen', furthering their working partnership and blurring the lines of rhythmic expectancy. Caught somewhere between club-orientated bass music, the inner workings of the super stylistic Zomby, Detroit techno and 8-bit digital dancehall, their debut LP is home to a torrent of predatory drum-led assaults.

'Out In The Streets' marks the top end of the tempo, shuffling ominously as the LFOed stabs attempts to keep up with the double time hi-hats as the bass key changes back and forth. 'Gangslap' pummels its lower range around the kick drum, working your ears over with the reverbed tail end of the snare's comet whilst 'Foot Step' sounds like the lost soundtrack to the world's best RPG, swatted up in a pro studio with the bass going though numerous compressors to find the optimum warmth.

An album in the truest sense of the word, 93 Million Miles explores every possibility; every tempo, direction and outcome in a completely unique and club friendly way. Even the wandering charm of 'Cyclic Sun' or 'Don't Fight It' could push a sway out of you when your sweat drenched with your eyes closed, lost in some sound proofed darkened basement somewhere."

Words by Oli Marlow (Sonic Router)

CD and Vinyl version comes with 320kbps MP3 downloads.
