After a string of acclaimed gangster movies, Takeshi Kitano’s sixth film was charged by particular of its soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi. An unconventional drama about two teen drop outs, ‘Kids Return’’s offbeat characters express melancholy and hope, but their story resounds with especial intensity due to compelling arrangements by Ghibli’s long-standing composers. Classical compositions are wrapped up with elements of experimental electronica, minimalist temporalities, Indonesian gamelan and West African percussion, resulting as a magic narrative on their own.
