Grant McPhee’s Far from the Apple Tree is a Neo-noir film about trust, betrayal and a whole lot of sleuthing around. The film’s haunting soundtrack, composed by Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade and electroacoustic composer Shawn Pinchbeck, conveys beautifully the sweeping romance and melancholia of Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks soundtrack and the otherworldliness of kosmische classicism; ghostly synths and tentative percussion guide the suspended notes beneath McDowall’s forlorn vocal line.
