Those of you who copped Light In The Attic’s celebrated recent compilation Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 may have had your interest peaked in Masahiro Sugaya. Horizon Volume 1, issued here for the first time outside of Sugaya’s native Japan, should satisfy any cravings you might have had to hear more music from the artist. This is a lovely set of discrete music, ambient piece, sound art and minimalist composition from Sugaya. Certain tracks incorporate something close to a new age influence, though Sugaya’s compositions feel too earthy for the comparison to be completely apt - quite an achievement given that Horizon Volume 1 was composed exclusively on digital instruments.
