Somehow eluding the stringent gaze of 2018’s Oxnard producer Dr. Dre, Anderson Paak simultaneously wrote and recorded the album’s follow-up. Remarkably, Ventura sees the duality of Paak as mirrored by its predecessor, a stripped back album of vintage-like soul numbers to Oxnard’s eye-on-the-charts impulses. For those still unsold on Paak, there’s a long list of illustrious collaborators who can vouch for him, including The Alchemist and Smokey Robinson.
