It’s a surprise to hear such a wildly inventive and kinetic release from a septuagenarian, but Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti’s Poison Fruit is exactly that. Then again, Conti’s been conducting his ‘samba doido’ (crazy samba) experiments on Brazilian dance music over the last half century - as a member of jazz-funk trio Azymuth, and more recently in collaboration with hip hop legend Madlib. One listen to the psycho-disco of ‘Bacurau’ will convince you that Conti is the Holger Czukay of the samba world.
