A primary school choir from rural Niger who were accompanied by their teacher’s guitar playing, the Troupe Ecole Tudu were an unlikely set of musical game-changers. However, their combination of massed vocals and gently pulsing six-string rhythms brought them many accolades when they released their album Oyiwane back in 1985. Indeed, the record’s success paved the way for the creation of many subsequent female voice groups in the nation. Now Sahel Sounds have restored and remastered the original recordings for their first release outside of Niger.
