A serious array of talent on display here. The legend that is Merzbow joins forces with Hexa - a duo made up of Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) - for a record of brutalised noise. Merzbow and Stewart have collaborated in the past, and through the fog of distortion and grinding feedback you get the sense that everyone is enjoying themselves here. Mind you, that’s not to imply that anyone involved has gone soft for Achromatic - parts of the ‘Merzhex’ suite are dark and stormy even by Merzbow’s standards, while lengthy closer ‘Hexamer’ develops from rumbling drones into a vicious cacophony.
