Richard King describes the creation of an industry where musicians were given the creative freedom to do what they want regardless of the financial or commercial consequences and the development of bands like Orange Juice, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Teenage Fanclub, Broadcast, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, and Arctic Monkeys.
